OUR STORY

In 2020, the world stood still. The pandemic brought uncertainty, fear, and financial hardship. Our family was no exception. My husband faced difficult days at work, with cuts looming over us. I watched him carry the weight in silence, feeling powerless. I was a new mother, cradling our four-month-old baby girl, and the thought of leaving her to work outside the home was unimaginable.

Then, in April, life delivered another blow—I lost my father. Grief wrapped around me, heavy and unrelenting. The pain was overwhelming, and the days felt endless. I needed to breathe, to find a way out of the darkness. I needed a purpose, something to hold on to when everything seemed to fall apart.

Amid the chaos, an idea took root. We started baking cupcakes. Simple, sweet, comforting. I’ve always loved baking. It’s a piece of my childhood—a legacy passed down from my mother. Growing up in Nigeria, every occasion was celebrated with cakes made from scratch, beautifully decorated with designs inspired by the Wilton books my mom cherished. I remember flipping through those pages, fascinated by the swirls and patterns. Those memories stayed with me, etched in my heart.

With those memories and the guidance of modern decorating videos, I ventured into the world of cake artistry. I baked my first set of buttercream cupcakes and shared them on Instagram. It was a leap of faith, a whisper to the universe, and I left the rest to fate.

But this journey wasn’t mine alone. During the darkest days, my neighbor became my biggest rock. She saw my pain, understood my silence, and stood by me when the world felt heavy. She didn’t just offer words of comfort; she walked the journey with me.

The name “Mama Bear Cakery” holds a special place in my heart. Before this journey began, I homeschooled my two boys for three years, and we called it “Mama Bear Homeschool.” It was a symbol of love, strength, and togetherness. When I decided to step into the world of baking, I wanted my children to feel included, to share this journey with me. It was their idea to carry the name forward, and so, in May 2020, Mama Bear Cakery was born. It became my strength when everything else seemed to crumble—a tribute to my father, a promise to my family, and a canvas for the hidden talent I carried within me for years.

For 4.5 years, we grew in Qatar, baking with love and serving smiles. Every cake became a story, every order a celebration. And now, as we embark on a new chapter in Calgary, Alberta, we carry the same dreams, the same determination. We embrace the challenges of a new land, ready to learn, grow, and flourish.

Every cake, every client, every post… has a story. This is ours. A story of love, loss, courage, and hope. It’s more than just baking; it’s about resilience, about finding light when the world seems dark. It’s about friendship—the kind that lifts you up when you’re at your lowest, the kind that stands by you through thick and thin. It’s about family—working together, supporting each other, and celebrating every little victory. It’s about creating joy—one cake at a time.

Welcome to Mama Bear Cakery.
